What is Titanium dioxide?
Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is an often found mineral from which Titanium is also derived. It is used as a white pigment and has a wide range of applications including paint, sunscreen and food additive. It is transparent, alcohol free and chemically inert. Titanium dioxide is nontoxic, inexpensive and Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) substance.
How does Titanium dioxide work?
Titanium Dioxide is a photocatalyst and it reacts with Ultraviolet light to produce antioxidants that breaks down cellular walls of microorganisms, destroying them in the process. This is an ongoing process and the stronger the UV light the faster the kill rate.
What is SANCLEAN™ TiO2 Nano Coating?
SANCLEAN™ coating is a proprietary Titanium Dioxide coating doped with small amounts of silver and sulphur to enhance its antimicrobial properties killiing process in the absence of light. It is also a Metamaterial which makes the coating extremely robust and long lasting. It bonds with any surface it is applied on to form a scratch resistant coating with a ROH hardness of 6 (equivalent to ceramic).
Can SANCLEAN™ TiO2-coating be removed?
The coating is generally robust but can be partially removed by abrasive material like steel wool, sandpaper or very high pressure jet water. To completely remove the coating a polish remover will have to be applied with a rotary polishing brush.
How does the air cleaning work?
To ensure clean air, the pollutants and microorganisms in the air are repeatedly brought in contact with the coated surface on the air filter and evaporation fins when air is recirculated through the aircon system. This effectively removes any pathogens in the air as it traverses the surface area of the coated filters and evaporation coils. It will also decompose nitrogen oxide(NOx), formaldehyde, benzene and other volatile organic compounds (VOC)
How does the antibacterial effect of TiO2 work?
The SANCLEAN™ coating produces antioxidants(Hydroxyls and Anions) whenever it is activated by UV. This attacks any microorganism that fall onto the surface by breaking down the cellular walls of any microorganisms. This effectively kills the cells and the kill rate is higher and faster if the UV light is strongest. In the absence of light, the silver component takes over the killing process.
Do I need special precleaners?
Special precleaners are not required. The surface should be cleaned thoroughly before coating. There should remain no residue on the surface.
Is there scientific evidence for the efficiency?
The efficacy of the coating can be regularly checked by taking ATP swabs of the surface and validated by ATP readings below 100RLUs. The Hygiena ATP meter is used in hospitals to quickly validate the sanitary health of the surfaces. (Swab test is applicable for SANCLEAN PRO only)
What happens if the coated surface is damaged?
Scratches and small marks do not reduce the efficiency of the titanium dioxide coating. Usual effects of the weather do not wear the coating. The coating can only be removed by extreme influences like continuing scouring with sand or granulates (Harsh chemical). The coating can also be easily touched up by spraying SANCLEAN™ over the damaged area.
Does the coating work with sparse sunlight indoors?
Silver is a known germicide and the doping of SANCLEAN™ TiO2 with a small amount of silver is enough to ensure that the killing effect of the coating is not diminished in the dark or very low light. The addition of sulphur and metamaterial also improves the light sensitivity of the coating allowing it to work even in varying light levels.
What has to be observed if Titanium Dioxide is applied onto a surface without pre cleaning?
The surface is often covered with oil and dirty particles which will affect the bonding of the coating.
How should titanium dioxide be stored?
Titanium dioxide should be stored cool and dark, at a temperature of 5 to 25°C.
Can titanium dioxide be applied with a brush or a paint roller?
This is in principle no problem on rough and priming undergrounds. But it is very difficult to apply a constant and even covering layer, therefore we advise against it.
How quickly does San Clean work?
Activation occurs immediately when exposed to ultraviolet light; however, it takes a while for all the hydrocarbons, VOC’s, NOx and SOx in a room or in the air outside a building to come in contact with the TiO2 crystals.
Will San Clean work with reflected light and how much light is needed?
UV light bounces around just like visible light, so reflected or ambient light works fine to activate San Clean.
Will San Clean work better on rough or smooth surfaces?
San Clean will work equally well on both surfaces.
